The 2007 New York Giants had every
reason to get off track and lose sight of their goal of winning the
Super Bowl—they lost their first two regular season games and most
people expected them to lose each of their post season games. Other
obstacles the Giants faced included:
- Losing to each team they played in the post-season during the regular season
- Injuries to key players
- Trailing the undefeated New England Patriots at half-time during the Super Bowl
Despite the fact that the New York
Giants had almost no chance to achieve their goal on paper, they went
on to become Super Bowl champions that year. And the reason why is
that they never lost sight of their goal and stayed on track.
It isn’t just NFL players that have
to stay on track and overcome obstacles to achieve their goals. It
is everyone. When I was working towards my goals in fitness, health,
and career, I ran into my own obstacles.
- My man left me
- A necklace I wore since I was four (and intended to pass down generation to generation) was lost
The key to overcoming these obstacles
was finding the positives within the negatives. For instance, with
the necklace (even though it still hurts and the necklace can’t be
replaced) I see my generation as something that lives inside of me
and can never be lost. With my man, I figured he was never really
there because, if he was, he never would have left so easily.
When you are working towards your goals
you will be given every reason to give up. Giving up is an
easy thing to do, but to this I say:
“You want to give up, quit, or throw it all away because now you are suffering? Let me just say that is not a good enough reason. Now would be the time to look at it in a different light and push through it and set even higher goals. “
It seems easy for me to say, but I have
been through hard times and never lost focus or got off track. I
could have gone back to my old career and settle, but instead I
continue to eat red velvet cheesecake (my favorite) and be in the
best shape of my life.
If it seems hard, it’s because it is.
It isn’t easy because, if it were, it wouldn't have to be a goal
because you could just do it with little to no effort. Since
overcoming obstacles is a part of achieving goals, it is easy to fall
off track or talk ourselves out of something than it is to look at
the positive side. Not doing what is easy, however, is exactly what
it will take.
